About Us

This business calculator has been written for the Milton Keynes Low Carbon living initiative, and has been funded by Milton Keynes Council as part of its wider campaign aimed at lowering the carbon footprint of the city. Technical input has come from the National Energy Foundation, a registered charity (no. 298951) focused on encouraging the better and more sustainable use and production of energy.

The carbon dioxide equivalents of your energy use are based upon the annual figures produced by the UK's Department for the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC), as part of their 2009 GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting. Transport factors are omitted from this version of the calculator; they can be found on the Defra/DECC reporting page or on the Foundation's own simple carbon calculator.

The energy/CO2 splits, recommendations and good practice values have been drawn from a variety of sources, including the UK Government's Best Practice Programme, the Energy Technology List, the Carbon Trust and published benchmarks, as well as certain data proprietary to the Foundation. Estimated savings from applying the recommendations will vary greatly between organisations, depending on the exact arrangements currently in place and the way energy is managed within an organisation. As such, any estimates of savings should be seen as indicative only, and neither Milton Keynes Council nor the Foundation can be held responsible for the failure to achieve any potential savings indicated by this calculator, nor for any direct or consequential loss from acting on its recommendations.

This calculator aims to reflect typical UK practice. Many of its assumptions and suggestions would also apply in other temperate climates to similar types of business or organisation. However carbon dioxide calculations arising from electricity use are specific to the UK grid average. If you wish to discuss ways in which a bespoke version of this calculator could be used, wither elsewhere within the UK or internationally, then please contact the National Energy Foundation.

We hope that you have found this calculator useful. If you have any specific comments or suggestions about ways in which it might be improved, please contact the National Energy Foundation.
